I have been reading a few books lately mostly specifically about sugar, grains and weight loss and the interesting thing is that they exactly mirror my beliefs on this subject. My beliefs of course stem from my own experience but also of witnessing the plight of others who keep trying to do the ‘diet and exercise’ advice and fail spectacularly for years, some never succeeding and spending most of their lives miserable. (After dishing out hundreds of dollars on programs that can never work.)
When researching the post on exercise for weight loss, I came across this piece which showed why the hour a day or 3 times a week exercise regime that most of us are doing, isn’t doing much for our weight loss goals.
It’s partly to do with what happens for the rest of our 23 hours per day and also the fact that poor eating choices do far more damage than can be rectified by moderate exercise.
It has to be something like 90 mins of intense exercise daily to have any effect on your weight and many of us can’t keep that up – or like me, I don’t want to, it’s just not the life I want to lead.
So let’s check out this daily calorie usage just by living thing…
The articles published recently about the questionable effective relationship between exercise and weight loss mirror my experiences.
It’s funny because I have worked things out for myself for a long time now regarding weight loss based on how it feels for my body, and it has led me to the place I am now – happy, healthy the weight I want to be without much effort at all.
It helped me wade through the information overwhelm which is mostly conflicting and arrive at my truth. First it was about sugar which is now mainstream, then it was grains thanks to the Paleo crew who made that more well known and here is just another thing that my body taught me first.
Muscles help burn calories faster so therefore you should get muscles first to lose weight – apparently…
Ok so it’s no secret that I don’t like going to the gym; just doesn’t do it for me from a number of angles and now despite the fact that the fitness crew out there still blast away that it’s the best thing ever and many, many weight loss programs insist that you must go to the gym to lose weight, I am finally at peace with the facts that:-
a) I don’t need to go any where near a gym to lose weight
b) I don’t need to feel bad, less than or hopeless because I don’t go
c) it’s perfectly fine to know what you don’t like and it doesn’t mean you are lazy
d) some people love it – so go for your life! Just leave the rest of us alone.
(In fact truth be told, apparently the stats are that only about 10% of the population go to the gym, so there is way more of us who don’t – so there!)
