I have been reading a few books lately mostly specifically about sugar, grains and weight loss and the interesting thing is that they exactly mirror my beliefs on this subject. My beliefs of course stem from my own experience but also of witnessing the plight of others who keep trying to do the ‘diet and exercise’ advice and fail spectacularly for years, some never succeeding and spending most of their lives miserable. (After dishing out hundreds of dollars on programs that can never work.)
On your journey to weight loss, discovering a better way to make your favourite taste sensations is critical if your new lifestyle is going to last for the long haul.
So many people I see are trying to lose weight again and again, because they were able to muster enough willpower/determination for long enough to stay away from the cookie jar or keep going to boot camp for 3 days a week and get some results, but once that laser focus is relaxed even for a little, it comes piling back on again. So I’d say the method is wrong, wouldn’t you?
My husband and I were on a road trip to find a field of sunflowers. He is a photographer, so these fun adventures lead us to all kinds of stunning places where I can just sit, enjoy and bask in the beauty of the planet. As we passed a McDonald’s sign he said, “The Golden Arches sign makes me feel sick these days…”
This was an interesting statement as he was once a junk food king, devouring Maccas on the way home from work, pizza for dinner, Hungry Jacks as a legitimate lunch option and downing all matter of soft drinks as part of his normal diet. It didn’t make him overweight but there seemed to be an internal protest going on and slowly over time, it seemed his body couldn’t handle it any more. Call it age, call it just being overloaded with crap for too long, call it whatever you like but the stomach pains, gut pains, feeling nauseous, just generally feeling bad after this type of food led him to eat it less and less often to the point where now he doesn’t eat it at all.
It’s true, most of my recipes are for sweetish stuff, as is my preference. However not everyone is the same and I have been asked a few times if I had any more savoury type snack options. I listed a few in my book Lite as a Feather, such as the Feta, Tomato and Olive sticks and Cheesy Chips on my blog. However a type of savoury cracker took my fancy and I wanted to make the simplest, best tasting one and so the experimentation began…

I thought it was a great idea because in any kind of conversation around food and all the things I don’t eat, people always ask me, “so what do you eat?!” So here is a snapshot.

I had a fantastic conversation with a friend Pam who has been overweight all of her adult life, tried everything to lose it as well, without success. She loves to exercise, drinks lots of water, is into alternative health and the Law of Attraction, is active, fun loving, gets out lots but still this is the one thing that has niggled her and her whole family actually, all their lives.
As I slowly tell people what I am up to with my book, many are curious and ask a few more questions about what the main philosophies are based around and I always reply, “the summary is… doing what works for you.”
For so long, the common message has been that there is one right way and if you are not doing it, then you are wrong. The impression given is that if you can’t do it, then you must be hopeless, useless, have no willpower, have no discipline, you are lazy etc, which is far from the truth. It’s just that the advice given doesn’t work for you.
